One of Ray's fans, "am I a grownup now?" a frequent commenter to this blog, is coming from England, with her husband, to visit the blind hound. (In the interests of full disclosure, she is actually going to N.Y. to meet up with family. But then they are making a slight detour to the greater Washington, D.C. area to meet Ray.)
In preparation for the visit, Ray will be getting a bath today so that he doesn't smell like Fritos. (Oddly enough, when Ray and I went to the pet store yesterday to buy catfood, one of our favorite cashiers, who also has a Redtick Coonhound, said to me; "Have you ever noticed how Redtick feet smell like Fritos?" I admitted that Ray, on occasion, smells like Fritos but I didn't realize the smell was emanating from his feet.) Gregg was the first one to notice the Frito Phenomenon and ever since he mentioned it, I know when Ray is ready for a bath because I start to yearn for Fritos. So before our visitors arrive (tomorrow) Ray is going to get a bath.
We are excited. Ray is an international sensation!
How wonderful! Ray is a rock star here in WV, too :) I wonder if the Frito Phenomenon applies to Black & Tan Coonhounds? I'm going to go home and smell Daisy's feet this evening.

Remember to post your results. I'm totally curious!
DeleteYesterday evening I sniffed the feet of two German Shepherds, two Beagles, a Great Pyr-ish dog (my blind boy) and a B&T Coonhound. The only Frito feet at my house belong to Molly, my 14 year old German Shepherd. Everyone else smelled like fresh-mown grass.

I gotta give you credit for your research effort. That was a good random sample. Did anyone think you were weird, asking to smell their dog's feet?
DeleteBelieve it or not, all six dogs in my sample belong to me. The dogs definitely thought I was weird, however.

I'm speechless.
DeleteYeah, I get that a lot, but we're well-situated to manage a pack that size. We live on four acres in an agricultural area. The dogs have the run of the house and a big fenced yard. They have two well-trained people to feed them, dole out treats and operate the door to the yard (one of the Beagles can open it by herself, but we don't encourage her) It's a really lovely place to be a dog...or a person, for that matter ;-)
DeleteThank goodness. I was imagining you as an apartment dweller in New York City. (kidding)
DeleteHa! You'd be surprised at how much I worry about being mistaken for an apartment dweller in NYC...or a crazy dog lady on a slippery slope to hoarding.
DeleteEnjoy your visit with the Murray family -it's so nice that you and Ray get to meet your friends from across the pond! If only Eastern Europe would be so accommodating.

When Zoe was a puppy her feet would smell like pop corn (fritos are make of corn aren't they??) It should not surprise you that Ray is famous....He's RAY! What is not to love?
ReplyDeleteWOW!! I am glad that Roxy, my beagle mix, isn't the only Frito smelling dog out there!!! BTW don't tell her that bath day is tomorrow:) After the visit will Ray yell with an English accent? Sorry bad joke.
ReplyDeletewe are here and I have been ear licked by Ray....and it was just as we imagined ! Rather rudely I greeted Ray before Jean who had been kind enough to meet us at the station, but I hope she will forgive me...after all it was Ray who bought us together originally, so he must be given his rightful place in the greeting pecking order :-)
ReplyDeleteAs the aforementioned husband, I can attest to Ray's Frito-free friendly welcome & his pack initiation rite French kiss option (only declined by yours truly on account of my shyness & my lack of minty breath). A shout-out must go to Ray's kindly chauffeur & blogger for her equally friendly welcome to us virgin WV visitors :0)
ReplyDeleteErratum: we were virgin Virginia visitors :0.
